Light plays a critical role in architecture and human health. Not only does it provide the visual stimulus for the performance of critical tasks, it completes the architectural expression and has both psychological and physiological effects on the human body.
In this session we will explore these important aspects of lighting and learn how to select appropriate lighting techniques and lighting parameters that enhance our built and visual environments, as well as support our Circadian cycles.
We will also look at how controls and their compatibility with light sources play a crucial role in a successful design.

Learning Objectives
- Architectural integration of light sources: how the application of different lighting sources and techniques can be used to reinforce the nature of the spaces we design.
- Color Rendering Index (CRI), TM30, Color Quality Scale (CQS), and Color Temperature: evaluating appropriate selections and the impact these parameters have on specific design environments.
- Circadian impact: Understand the link between light and melatonin suppression and cortisol generation, two key factors in circadian entrainment.
- Controls: assess the importance of matching compatibilities between controls and sources, low end dim levels, protocols, use of color and warm dim options, avoiding flicker.
