The lighting design of this 120,000 SF multi-floor office retrofit reflects the client’s self-described workplace culture: casual and hardworking. With various lighting techniques and fixtures used throughout the space, the new office successfully integrates architecture, lighting, technology, and hospitality into an inviting, invigorating space for staff and visitors alike.

Chicago O’Hare International Airport Terminal 5 Expansion, Chicago, IL

Terminal 5 at O’Hare International Airport is the terminal’s first major expansion since 1993, a significant step in O’Hare’s ambitious program to modernize one of the world’s most-traveled airports. Bathed in natural light, the urban plaza-inspired terminal is the main feature space. Thoughtful lighting design aims to provide a human-centric experience in a visually busy airport, with a design approach that is orderly and minimalistic, achieved in part through 3,260 precisely placed downlights and an array of 301 illuminated ​“eyelid-shaped” domes.

An open, 4‑story interconnecting stair is the primary feature of this new Salt Lake City office. A series of vertical metal ​“rods” span the full height of the stair and are encased in dark-coloured tubes of varying lengths to mimic sloping mountain ranges. This modern interpretation of the skyline celebrates the beautiful landscape and creates a striking contrast with the elegant, wood-wrapped stair in the foreground. Lighting plays an integral role in accentuating this feature over the course of the day, while simultaneously lighting the stairs.

This historic Broadway theatre reopened after an extensive renovation and the addition of a five-story annex. The lighting design highlights the architecture, increases light levels, decreases energy use, and provides eco-friendly controls. Historic fixtures were refurbished or replaced with replica fixtures and relamped with LED. The new five story annex utilizes custom decorative fixtures, linear coves, accents, and recessed downlights to elegantly illuminate the spacious lounges, bars, and restrooms. A custom chandelier, tensioned between the basement and roof, illuminates the main stairway and each level has a different decorative pendant to provide a distinct look to each space.

Ironworks Plaza Skate Rink and Sculpture Park, Mishawaka, IN

The city renovated an obsolete industrial area next to the river into a public ice-skating rink and sculpture garden. Luminous sculptures by artist James Brenner are embedded on islands within the rink, creating focal points around which skating and non-skating viewing occurs. The rink, sculptures, and building facade lighting programming are coordinated for colour and pacing, with an interface that facilitates the light sources to change with music. A QR code allows users to interact with the fog and light animations of the sculptures.
