IES Illumination Merit Awards for Six Schuler Shook Projects

The IES bestowed on Schuler Shook six Illumination Awards of Merit for lighting designs across a variety of project types including commercial, exterior public art, healthcare, and historic renovation.

A creative fusion of architecture, light and sculpture have transformed the once-drab lobby. The architectural lighting is designed to disappear” so the sculpture is the feature, suspended over a reflecting pool that appears to float above the floor.

Medtronic Plaza Horn Monument, Minneapolis, Minnesota

This 25-foot-high, 107-foot-long sculptural monument was integrated into a new sports arena plaza to evoke both the team and the sponsor. RGBW edge light follows compound curves and is complemented with uplight and post mounted side light. Patrons can walk through the piece to and from events, experiencing the visual movement of the inner reflective surface. Bird migration accommodations limited uplight and certain colour usage.

The open, modern environment of this 29,000 SF floor is designed around a culture of transparency, creativity and collaboration. The lighting responds to a variety of finishes – industrial in workstations and public areas and seamless sophistication in private meeting and collaboration areas. This new office space has continuous daylight dimming and automated solar shading that responds to real-time sky conditions.

The Christ Hospital Joint & Spine Center, Cincinnati, Ohio

Exterior lighting emphasizes the large-scale lantern” window that defines the new addition to the hospital. Interior lighting designs blend electric light with abundant daylight during the day, while creating a warm hospitality environment at night. Energy conscious lighting choices helped achieve LEED certification, and the facility ranks in the 99th percentile for patient satisfaction when compared to comparable hospitals.

This former factory was transformed into a research and development centre to innovate and improve manufacturing, developing real-world solutions. The lighting design promotes energy-efficiency, facilitates wayfinding, and brings visual order and scale to spacious open areas used for manufacturing, offices, and meeting areas.

Layers of light highlight this fifty-four-foot tall banking hall, from mural illumination to smooth lighting of the delicate ceiling and refurbishment of historic chandeliers. Recessed cove uplights were introduced, while quantities of downlights were greatly reduced without compromising light levels or uniformity.
