In addition to supporting music and drama performances for the high school, the Gichi-ziibi Center is regularly used for community events and visiting artists. One major participant in the project was the Lakes Area Music Festival which produces symphonic and chamber music concerts, ballet, and opera with professional artists from across the US. The Brainerd taxpayers voted to provide additional funds to support these larger events. This allowed the design team to include features such as adjustable acoustics and an expanded orchestra pit that are not typical of most high school auditoriums.

The Gichi-ziibi Center for the Arts features a new 1,200-seat proscenium theatre and a flexible black box known as the “Studio Stage.” The Center also includes new music ensemble rooms, practice rooms, makeup and dressing rooms, and a scene shop.
Schuler Shook designed the adjustable acoustic system, orchestra pit and pit cover, rigging, curtains, stage lighting, architectural lighting, and an integrated lighting control system.
