Navy Pier Flyover

Chicago, IL

An elevated pedestrian and bicycle pathway called The Navy Pier Flyover” was added adjacent to US Highway 41, a multilevel expressway known as Jean Baptiste Point DuSable Lake Shore Drive in Chicago. The pathway was designed to ease the worst bottlenecks on Chicago’s 18-mile lakefront trail.

Schuler Shook designed the lighting for the newly constructed pathway, including the illuminated vertical scrims visible from the expressway and below the flyover.

Schuler Shook provided both pedestrian lighting for the bridge surface, as well as architectural highlighting of the bridge structure. Working closely with the bridge architect and engineer we ensured that the pedestrian lighting is architecturally integrated. Extensive lighting calculations informed our design that produces horizontal illuminance for the surface of the path, and vertical illuminance to promote facial recognition for safety.
