These dual, modernist, residential high-rises designed by Ludwig Mies van der Rohe are registered Chicago landmarks and significant elements of Chicago’s skyline. The buildings were in need of careful renovation, and the residents commissioned the team of Krueck & Sexton as lead architects, Harboe Architects as historic preservationists, and Schuler Shook as lighting designers.

The focus of the renovation was to bring the building back to its original look, including the highly integrated lighting of pioneer lighting designer, Richard Kelly. Schuler Shook’s designers pored over old drawings and searched through historic records to learn as much as possible about the original light fixtures and lamps that Kelly had used, as well as his intent for the lighting scheme in the lobbies, plaza and parking ramp—all aspects of the lighting scope.
