3,260 downlights were added throughout the terminal, as well as recessed lights, and a luminous wall and ceiling. The lighting design creates a spacious, calm environment for passengers and showcase the terminal’s sculptural architecture at any light level.
O'Hare International Airport Terminal 5 Expansion
Chicago, IL
The expansion of O’Hare’s Terminal 5 is a signature element of O’Hare 21, a plan to improve efficiency and accessibility across O’Hare. Expansion and reconfiguration of existing space in the terminal increases gate capacity by 25 percent, expands security checkpoints, adds passenger amenities, and improves the overall experience from curbside to gate.
Schuler Shook’s precise fixture placement and use of various styles of lighting bring O’Hare’s Terminal 5 into the 21st century while honoring the original 1993 design and the thousands of passengers that use it every day.
