This monument design was inspired by a Gjallarhorn; the Minnesota Vikings sound a Gjallarhorn as a rally cry before home football games. The piece measures 107 feet long, 25 feet high, 30 feet wide and weighs over 38 tons. It is composed of intertwined ribbons which appear to connect underground.
The sculpture uses dimmable energy efficient LED sources as ground mounted uplight, spot lights added to existing plaza post lights, and internal lighting. The ribbon edges are illuminated with an RGBW colour changing linear source.
Custom cut diffusers follow the curves of the sculpture, secured with translucent fasteners that blend with the luminous surface. In-grade uplights were carefully located to minimize glare and work within the constraints of ADA base railings.
The seamless lighting effect throughout the sculpture was a result of close collaboration and multiple mock ups with the design team. The sculpture comes alive with illuminated colour movement on game days and special events using an astronomical controller.
