A central element of the 24-acre redeveloped waterfront known as Coachman Park, The Sound serves as a gathering place and a host to a wide range of production types from popular music and orchestral concerts to community festivals.

Removable seating for approximately 4,000 patrons and a grass seating area for blankets and lawn chairs creates space for approximately 15,500. Also included in the design is a private reception space and viewing deck for an upgraded experience. When not in use for events, the venue is designed to be open to the public as part of the overall park.

The unique structure integrates a catwalk system with rigging beams and chain motors from which production elements can be hung. The spatial programming and footprint of the venue accommodates efficient load-ins and load-outs, as well as backstage support spaces.

Schuler Shook provided theatre planning, architectural lighting design, stage lighting systems, and lighting control for the venue. The design accommodates approximately 4,000 patrons in removable seating beneath the canopy, including accessible seating for patrons using wheelchairs and other mobility devices, with an additional 5,000 patrons accommodated on the lawn. A private reception space and viewing deck offer an upgraded experience for event patrons.

The venue’s production infrastructure is designed for flexibility and efficiency. Rather than relying on permanent rigging, temporary chain motors are suspended from rigging beams integrated into the catwalk system, allowing production teams to configure lighting, audio, video, and other equipment to suit each event. Equipment towers throughout the audience area provide additional locations for lighting, video, audio, and follow spotlights. An in-house control position supports audio, video, and lighting production, with dedicated cable troughs connecting the position to the stage.

Schuler Shook’s lighting design provides a permanent infrastructure capable of supporting both visiting productions and smaller events produced by the City. The system includes power and data distribution for portable production equipment, a modest architectural lighting system for the pavilion, and a stage lighting system with dedicated control. The design also extends into the audience environment, illuminating the seating areas beneath the canopy and supporting a comfortable experience for patrons.

Behind the scenes, Schuler Shook planned and laid out the venue’s backstage support spaces, including green rooms for performers and their bands, crews, and production staff, as well as catering and craft services and laundry facilities. The stage and site layout were carefully developed to support efficient load-ins and load-outs, helping production teams move equipment quickly through the venue.

The Sound’s distinctive 50,300-square-foot tensile membrane canopy is inspired by a manta ray, reflecting Clearwater’s coastal environment while providing a visually light and airy architectural presence. Rising 88 feet at its centre, the canopy also provides shade and partial protection for performers and equipment during daytime performances and rehearsals.

Designed for year-round exposure to Florida’s challenging coastal climate, the venue incorporates durable materials and infrastructure suited to high humidity, salt air, and extreme weather. The concrete performance platform provides a resilient, easily maintained surface, while specialty flooring can be installed when required for dance or other performance types.

Perhaps most significantly, The Sound was designed to remain part of Clearwater’s public realm. In accordance with the City Charter, the venue is open to the public when events are not taking place, with removable seating allowing the performance space to transition seamlessly between a concert venue and an everyday component of the waterfront park.
