Schuler Shook’s theatre consultants worked closely with the University and dance faculty on the planning and technical design of four new dance studios, intended for use as both classrooms and performance spaces.
University of Michigan - Dance Building
Ann Arbor, MI
A 24,000 SF addition to the University of Michigan’s Brehm Pavilion brought the Dance Department out of an outdated, isolated physical education building into new facilities that provide closer proximity to their peers in the School of Music, Theatre & Dance.
Focusing on the specific needs of the Dance Department, Schuler Shook provided planning for seating configurations, flexible lighting and rigging, and appropriate flooring. Strong points were installed in the ceiling of the end-stage studio to ensure the safe use of circus silks. In addition to the traditional dance spaces, an immersive multimedia studio was designed to support the university’s Screen Dance Program.
