The RMIT University-owned building is a learning and teaching space by day that hosts traditional lectures and content creation and collaboration sessions using the cinema projection system. The full-sized cinema screen retracts to reveal a proscenium stage, fitted out with powered rigging, stage lighting and audio systems to support theatre technical training programs.
Capitol Theatre
Melbourne, VIC
The architecturally unique and beloved Capitol Theatre has been re-imagined as a true multi-use cultural and education space owned by RMIT University. The design and implementation process saw Schuler Shook working in close collaboration with multiple RMIT and industry stakeholders, the design team and authorities to balance the interlocking requirements of function, architecture and heritage.
By night, the Capitol becomes a cinema, complete with 4K DCI and 35mm film projection for a wide variety of users and audiences. The Capitol is the anchor venue for the Melbourne International Film Festival. The staging systems support extensive live production for long-term hirers including the multi-week Melbourne Comedy Festival.
IP camera and video systems connect the Capitol to RMIT’s broadcast studio at the other end of Melbourne’s CBD, to RMIT’s overseas campuses, and to remote learning and teaching contributors worldwide.
Schuler Shook’s scope included cinema systems, AV systems, broadcast systems, stage management systems, motorised rigging, new theatre stage, stage lighting and back of house lighting.
