University of Virginia – Shannon Library
Charlottesville, VA
Built in 1938, the Shannon Library is the largest on the University of Virginia campus, housing nearly one million volumes. In 2020, it underwent its first major renovation with a 100,000 SF restoration and 130,000 SF expansion.
Controlling light exposure levels for rare materials was a necessity. Spectral tuning was incorporated to simulate lighting from candlelight to daylight, allowing for authentic viewing of rare documents. Specialized lighting controlled exposure to protect rare materials while maintaining visitor visibility.
Schuler Shook also conducted daylighting and light pollution analyses.
