James Earl Jones Theatre

New York, NY

Previously the Cort Theatre, it’s now the only surviving and still active theatre on Broadway designed by architect Thomas Lamb. It reopened in 2022 after an extensive renovation of the existing theatre and an addition of a five-story, 20,000 square foot annex, providing better circulation between floors with elevators, generous lobby space, accessible restrooms, new dressing rooms space, and a rehearsal room. Schuler Shook provided architectural lighting and lighting control for both spaces.

The James Earl Jones Theatre was two projects in one. For the historic theatre our challenge was to recreate the original incandescent lighting with LED, while increasing light levels and highlighting the beautiful historic architecture. For the annex building we were tasked with creating contemporary, attractive hospitality spaces that complimented the historic theatre. Although distinct spaces, the language of coves and decorative fixtures feed off one another.”

The annex utilized custom decorative fixtures, linear coves, accents, and recessed downlights to elegantly illuminate the spacious lounges, bars, and restrooms.
