TP Texas Tech Maedgen Phase 2 41

Texas Tech University - The Charles E. Maedgen Jr. Theatre - Phase 2

Lubbock, TX

A reimagined Maedgen Theatre emerges, expanding from 35,000 to 90,000 square feet to better serve Texas Tech’s School of Theatre and Dance.

The Maedgen Theatre has long been home to Texas Tech’s School of Theatre and Dance, but its original 35,000-square-foot facility could no longer support the program’s evolving needs. Now expanded to 90,000 square feet, the reimagined theatre provides the space, technology, and resources necessary for students and faculty to thrive.

Following the successful completion of Phase 1, Schuler Shook advanced to Phase 2, enhancing the theatre’s performance infrastructure with key upgrades. A new fire curtain, upgraded dimming and LED stage lighting, and integrated control suites now support seamless operation.

The design approach evolved from painted scenery to digital media, creating immersive scenic environments that transform both walls and ceiling. Additional enhancements included new seating and a revised seating layout, along with renovated and expanded support spaces — featuring updated paint, wood, and metal shops, as well as a new costume shop.
