The TSA Pre-check area, Queuing Hall and tunnel provided inspiration for optimal use of daylight and electric light. Walking into the tunnel, the journey starts as expected, with lower lighting levels and standard height ceilings. Passengers then approach the queuing area, a large open space with abundant daylight. This intentional design creates a sense of expansion, decompression and wonder.
Midway International Airport Security Checkpoint Expansion
Chicago, IL
Expansion and relocation of the Passenger Security Checkpoint improved circulation and reduced waiting times while also providing an opportunity to reimagine the lighting aesthetic.
Lighting challenges included providing high illumination levels while remaining 20% under LEED requirements and incorporating the lighting fixtures into the intricate architectural design. The many coves and linear fixtures were coordinated to precise lengths.
